Nebulae, The Beautiful Faint Fuzzies

Interstellar gas pervades the universe, but is concentrated in galaxies. It is revealed to us in all it's color and glory when it is heated up, ionized, or simply illuminated by nearby stars and the processes that form them. This is a sampling of nebulae within the neighborhood of our Milky Way Galaxy. You can see and photograph most of these with relatively modest amateur equipment. M1, Crab

This is the guts of a star that exploded  about 400 years ago

M8, Lagoon

Three for the price of one, The lagoon, within it the Hourglass, and to the right an open cluster

M16, Eagle

At the heart of this nebula is one of the most famous pictures from the Hubble Space Telescope, the "pillars of life"

M17, Swan

If the ancients could have seen this, I wonder what kind of story they would have had for this beauty?

M20, Trifid

A beautiful combination of dark, reflection, and emission nebula

M27, Dumbbell

A great sight in a telescope, because it's close, big, and bright.

M42, 43, Orion

The biggest, brightest nebula of them all

M45, Pleiades

Only visible with a long exposure is the blue nebula within which the Pleiades reside

M57, Ring

In a telescope, this is small, but it hovers like a smoke ring among the stars

M76, Little Dumbbell

A tiny version of it's bigger cousin M27

M97, Owl

Near the handle of the big dipper

C4, Reflection

C11, Bubble

Our solar system resides in a relatively empty part of space. Here just such a space is being created

C19, Cocoon

An absorption, reflection, and emission nebula, and a newly forming open cluster too, all in one faint nebula

C20, N. America Nebula

In the midst of the Milky Way is this Nebula shaped like North America

C27, Crescent

Looking like a fireworks display, it is one, - of stellar proportions

C50, Rosette

In the heart of the Milky way and straight left from Betelgeuse, the left shoulder star of Orion

C63, Helix

A large, close, and beautiful planetary nebula

Running Man

Just above the better known Orion Nebula is this interesting reflection nebula

Horse Head and Flame

Probably one of the more recognizable sets of Nebula

Horse Head

First photographed in the 1800's, this has become one of the most recognized astro images.

Burning Bush or Flame

Right next to the left hand belt star of Orion is this Nebula

Christmas Tree

Interesting nebula with an open cluster (the Christmas Tree) in front of it.

Planetary Nebulae Series

Three different stages of planetary nebula evolution

California

To the right of the Pleiades lies a glowing cloud of hydrogen with a shape reminiscent of California
