M50, An open cluster - this image cropped and reduced from the original photo
Open cluster M50 is about 3,200 light years away. The angular diameter of the central part with the brightest stars is only about 10 light years in diameter. However it has a population of about 200 stars in the main body. The age is estimated as 78 million years. M50 is located in the heart of the Milky Way to the left of Orion, and at about the same height as M42.
