Mars September 5-8,  2003

You can see Mars slowly turning to the left. The center picture was taken on a different day, but shows a time period between the left and right hand views. This composite was taken around 10 days after Mars' closest approach to our planet in the past 60,000 years. By the end of Sept, Mars will still be closer (and bigger and brighter) than it will be again for the next 15 years.

8" F10 Celestron Schmidt Cassegrain Telescope, Nikon CP4500 camera
18mm eyepiece, Camera at 3.3x zoom
ISO 200, F 4.9, 1/125 sec
A set of photos from each time period averaged together to get a representative picture which was then adjusted for brightness and contrast.
The representative pics were combined into a composite. Finally the picture was cropped to zero in on Mars (4x)
