Lunar Eclipse

Total eclipse of the moon 5-15-03. Just coming out of totality. The moon never goes entirely dark like a solar eclipse. The light coming through the earth's atmosphere refracts and lights the moon with a ruddy color that gets deeper as the moon goes deeper into earth's shadow. Here you can see the shadow of the earth on the left, the diminishing effects of earth’s atmosphere as you move across the face of the moon to the right, until on the right the sun is beginning to light up the moon outside the edge of our atmosphere.
